The European Commission has proposed extending temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens for another year, until 3 March 2025. The EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive on 4 March 2022 by a unanimous decision of member states. The extension proposal is now awaiting adoption by the European Council.

The extension of the period of legal residence is important for employers. It means that they can employ a Ukrainian citizen for a longer period of time without the need to obtain documents legalizing residence and work. The possibility to perform work depends only on the employer's notification of the entrustment of work to the county labour office.
