European Union streamlines the process of crossing EU borders | PRO HR December 2022

2022.12.19

Starting next year, third-country nationals wishing to cross the EU border will no longer undergo traditional border controls in order to receive a stamp in their passport. Instead, the entrant will have to register with the EES system before each trip.

The process will apply to both holders of short-term Schengen visas and citizens of exempt countries.

A short-term visa entitles you to stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within the last 180 days. A foreigner holding such a visa can cross various EU borders multiple times during this period.

The new regulations will require the traveller to register each planned border crossing in advance in the EES system.

In addition to EU countries, the new rules will apply to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland.
