Wrongly chosen sanction will not have an effect
Most breaches of duty by employees are minor. Employees may incur various types of liability for these. In practice, informal "educational talks", punitive measures and, in more serious cases, dismissal are often used.
The decision on which "disciplinary measure" to apply should be geared towards achieving the objective, i.e. eliminating the infringement. An ill-chosen disciplinary measure will not have this effect and may expose the employer to the risk of litigation.
